We’re all probably weary by now of reading about pandemic-related business issues. But we keep thinking and writing because the issues persist. Workers continue to disengage and quit, so engagement continues to be a topic of conversation. I’d like to add a little perspective from what we’ve seen at HumanQ, and the impact coaching, especially Group Coaching, can have on engaging – and even energizing – employees at all levels.
Quiet Quitting has been attributed to an unwillingness to embrace corporate values, and thinking that personal life and corporate life can’t peacefully coexist. But people don’t generally take a job they know they’re going to be dissatisfied with. It happens over time. What we’ve seen is that the much talked-about distaste for corporate culture may be a misinterpretation of what’s really going on.
Gen Z is a group that is looking for a strong sense of self to fit into a larger group dynamic. They don’t want to be defined by their friends, their activities or their work. Instead, they want to be defined as themselves first, as a unique part of any group they’re in. When workplaces can tap into this sense of personal worth, they have powerful value to offer.
Our Group Coaching sessions bring together people with diverse roles to solve problems that are aligned with the strategic goals of the organization. Since each member brings different expertise and perspectives to the group, they are each uniquely valuable to addressing current projects as well as more strategic future-driven outcomes. Success comes from every person being able to contribute their perspective and experience in meaningful ways.
You can probably see where it’s going from here. By identifying, respecting and valuing each individual, Group Coaching helps each individual co-create the future together and lead from the position they’re in. It becomes the job they signed up for in the first place, because they feel heard and like they’re making a real contribution.
There’s no magic solution to quiet quitting, but a change of perspective toward thinking about how your people can be set up to view their roles differently has proven to us to be a great start.
